Video surveillance and 5G heading to the cities of the future

By:Isabel Fierro |

5G technology is the basis of new advances in the world’s latest generation, where through interconnectivity with smart devices, the construction of more sustainable cities that offer a better quality of life is sought.

There are currently many discussions about the impact that 5G will have on network video in cities and what opportunities it can offer for companies. One of them, without a doubt, is connecting solutions with different sensors in cities to obtain data and develop more actionable intelligence.

While urbanization in large cities continues, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has proposed that by 2050, 70% of the global population lives in cities, therefore, the challenge towards connectivity in large cities it becomes increasingly important. In this sense, the digital sphere becomes more relevant towards growth, innovation and sustainability where one of the main objectives is reflected in the benefit of hyperconnection in all the inhabitants of smart cities. With an immediate hyperconnected future, video surveillance becomes more relevant to build more intelligent spaces, that is, cities connected to the network.

According to Mauricio Swain, Business Development Manager for Axis in Latin America, the new era of 5G is a digital revolution that has come to broaden the horizons of video technology. For smart cities, it is a new opportunity to improve the networking of a whole series of devices in various sectors, such as transport and mobility, buildings and infrastructure, logistics, health, among others.

“We see growing opportunities and enabled use cases by connecting IoT and security devices wirelessly using multiple technologies, including 5G. The added cybersecurity capabilities fit well with Axis’ value proposition, as we look not only at network security, but also at the security of individual network components,” said the specialist.

Although video surveillance has not reached its limit of innovation around 5G, today it is known that cities benefit from the use of network cameras, which could be used for multiple aspects in video surveillance, in order to improve security. but also as a tool to collect data and statistics for traffic management and environmental control.

“With 5G, cities will benefit from the ability to transfer data at higher speeds, and we are investigating more exciting possibilities in this area. At Axis we closely follow the development of 5G and we focus on the possibilities it offers in video and audio transmission to improve the services offered in cities to make them more livable”, assured Swain.

In addition, the multiple video surveillance technologies hand in hand with 5G networks allow working more efficiently in all sectors, where technological advances have become a key instrument for cities in their quest to become smarter, for As such, they show real potential for security solutions in large or high-traffic sites, and could bring particular benefits from a cybersecurity perspective, as well as provide greater intelligence tools in large cities.

Today, 5G networks give life to the new era of the integration of new technologies through the Internet of Things (IoT), which has allowed an evolution that goes beyond a simple transition, because with both concepts, it is possible to carry out the hyperconnection of video surveillance devices to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants.
