Strategies for compliance with security protocols in the mining industry

By:admin |

Mining is one of the most important sectors for the development and economy of Latin American countries, but at the same time it is the one that implies the most risks for its workers. In Colombia alone, the Ministry of Mines reported that in the first quarter of 2022 there were 19 emergencies in the sector that have claimed the lives of 36 workers. The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that mining comprises about 1% of the world’s workforce, but at the same time causes 8% of fatal accidents.

For the ILO, it is of vital importance that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have a regulatory framework regulated by national policies and work safety programs, in order to promote coordinated actions of the government entities in charge of the mining sector. Due to this, industrial processes have been implemented that respond efficiently to the demands demanded by the responsibilities of the companies in the sector, which not only seek to comply with the regulations, but also to ensure the work environment of their employees. In this area, various public and private companies have chosen to use video surveillance technology with IP standards as a risk prevention strategy and with the aim of ensuring that workers comply with work protocols in a mine.

One of the fundamentally implemented processes with the support of video surveillance is risk analysis, which makes it possible to identify lines of care and protection to prevent possible incidents. This is where video solutions supported by analytics become relevant as they are very useful to facilitate management tasks and compliance with standards, in an innovative and efficient way, and increasing benefits for companies in the mining industry.

Network video surveillance technologies such as cameras in conjunction with network audio, allow the identification, through video analytics, of workers who do not wear the essential safety equipment for each area, even if they use it incorrectly. At the same time, they make it possible to transmit messages through networked audio devices to issue alerts on the use of safety elements such as helmets, boots, vests, etc.

Diana Ardila, Regional Sales Manager for the southern cone of Latin America at Axis Communications explains that: “Knowing the benefits of remote control and monitoring with the help of video, audio and intelligent analysis technologies, allows us to adapt new tools that result in safer environments and intelligent, but they also imply greater attention to the care of the personnel in charge of transporting the resources”.

In dangerous work environments, such as the one represented by the mining industry, video surveillance cameras can see “more than the human eye” in the sense that they are capable of predictive analysis of risk situations, and thus prevent accidents, thanks to technologies that allow detecting and verifying potential problems through thermal or infrared cameras.

Moreover, they can improve employee safety by monitoring each area of the facility, minimizing unnecessary human exposure to hazardous areas, and enabling remote visual verification for readings from installed gauges and sensors, thus supporting increased production efficiency. in the company.

The Axis expert comments that “video surveillance solutions allow one or more operational or security tasks to be assigned to specific cameras, so that the same camera that monitors the general well-being of an area can simultaneously support compliance with security protocols and previously implemented protection, making it possible to install fewer cameras and guaranteeing a profitable investment for the optimization and updating that the mining industry requires today.”

Currently the security regulations, but at the same time they have strengthened the security measures that companies must comply with before government inspection systems, such as the automation of the most difficult and dangerous tasks to reduce the direct risk to workers and the adoption of better Surveillance equipment to help detect and prevent possible dangers.

Network video technologies integrated into systems with IP standards represent a true solution for mining companies, while generating great investment savings and the essential optimization of the tasks that the new legislation requires of them.
